Astro and Night Photography Workshop

January 29 @ 7:00 pm 11:59 pm

Rothiemurchus, Cairngorms National Park

£65 per person

An evening of guided photography tuition shooting the dark night sky.

  • Learn the art of night-time photography from an experienced and knowledgeable tutor
  • Stargaze in one of Scotland’s best dark-sky areas, amid ancient Caledonian Forest
  • Overcome the challenges of shooting in the dark to create amazing night-time land and skyscapes

Summary

We will meet near Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park at 7pm. By this time it will be fully dark so please remember a headtorch and plenty of warm clothes.

After introductions we will set off to walk a short distance on good trails to an area with clear views of the sky and the mountains. The hills are likely to be snow covered at this time of year so often show up well in night-time photographs. We will spend the next few hours watching the sky and making photographs.

When we arrive at our intended location we will be moving around off-path, where the terrain is rough and footing can be tricky. Good balance is therefore essential.

We will aim to return and conclude the workshop for midnight (5 hours total).

Distance Walked: Approx 5km
Ascent/Descent: Approx 50m
Terrain: Well made trails, with rough heathery sections

About Your Guide

I have been photographing the Scottish Highlands all my adult life. I specialise in woodland and mountain photography, and there is nothing I love more than getting outdoors with my camera, getting to know a place in intimate detail. There’s no better feeling to me than discovering some secret nook of the landscape, waiting for the perfect moment, and capturing a scene of surpassing beauty.

I have worked as a guide throughout the Highlands, and have guided photography and hiking adventures for various adventure travel companies incl Wilderness Scotland and National Geographic.

I hold the Mountain Leader (Summer) qualification as well as a Leave No Trace Trainer’s certificate and Outdoor First Aid certificate.

I like to think of myself as warm and friendly, and a safe pair of hands to help you discover a deeper connection with the wild places.

What We’ll Learn:

We will focus on how to create night-time landscape photographs featuring the night sky. I will be happy to provide instruction on which settings to use, how to set up your camera and tripod, and how to avoid common problems in night photography. We will have the chance to capture images of the milky way and the constellations above the Cairngorm mountains; time-lapses that show the movement of the stars; or possibly even the northern lights if luck is on our side. We can also bring the landscape around us to life with techniques such as light painting.

As a keen amateur astronomer I will also be happy to teach you about the night sky itself; learning to recognise specific constellations and stars.

I will consistently seek your feedback and input throughout the workshop to ensure that you are getting the learning you want.

What You Need:

We will be learning in an outdoor environment, in winter and at night, so it is important you have the right gear to stay warm and comfortable, and to keep your camera dry if needs be.

Essential:

  • Outdoor clothing (waterproofs, warm layers etc)
  • Hat and Gloves
  • Headtorch with spare batteries
  • Walking boots
  • Camera
  • Tripod

Recommended/Optional:

  • Gaiters
  • Hot drink and food
  • Drybag/waterproof camera case

What Kind of Camera Do I Need?

You don’t need the world’s most expensive camera to be an amazing photographer. For night time photography, however, you must at the very least be able to manually set the shutter speed, aperture, focus, and ISO sensitivity.

Night photography is one the more challenging things for a camera to do, so for this workshop I do recommend that you bring either a mirrorless or DSLR camera as a minimum standard.

A wide angle lens and steady tripod are also essential.

If you are unsure if your camera is up to the job, drop me a line or post a comment below.
