Aviemore Space Walk

February 26 @ 4:00 pm 8:00 pm

Aviemore, Cairngorms National Park

£35 per person

Take a guided tour of the planets as we walk through a scale model of our solar system.

  • Learn about the wonders of space as we walk outward from the Sun to beyond Neptune
  • Gain a new appreciation of the scale of the cosmos by experiencing the relative sizes and distances between worlds
  • Discover what makes each world special, and what makes Earth the jackpot planet it is
  • 6km total walk on well made path – suitable for adults and children over 10

Summary

We will meet in Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park at 4pm. It will be dark shortly after we meet, so please remember to bring a headtorch and warm clothes. Most of our walk will be in the dark, allowing us to experience the darkness of space as well as hopefully enjoying views of the stars.

After introductions we will start our exploration of the solar system. We will begin with the Sun, the source of heat and light for all the planets. Moving outward we will encounter each planet in turn.

We will quickly pass the rocky inner worlds – including Earth – and the asteroid belt. Beyond this point lie the gas giants, comets and icy dwarf worlds. We will have to walk further and further to find each one, and begin to get a sense of the immense distances between worlds as we pass them by.

By the time we reach Pluto in the outer solar system we will have walked a distance of approximately 3km. From here the sun would look little different to the other stars, and the Earth practically invisible. It is a wonderful place to stand and consider our place in the universe.

Walking back we can imagine ourselves as an icy comet, streaking in toward the sun from the cold depths of space.

As we walk back we can also keep our eyes peeled for a glimpse of the real planets if the skies are clear, hopefully with a new found sense of perspective and wonder.

Distance Walked: 6km
Ascent/Descent: Negligible
Terrain: Well made path

What We’ll Learn:

Above all, I hope you come away from this night with a new sense of understanding and wonder. We’ll talk about the things that make each world unique, as well as some of the story of how we came to discover such knowledge. We’ll also be able to think about all the things that are still waiting to be discovered in our solar system, and walk to the literal edge of human knowledge.

If we have clear skies then I will also be happy to teach you about the night sky itself; learning to recognise specific constellations and stars.

About Your Guide

I have been photographing the Scottish Highlands all my adult life. I specialise in woodland and mountain photography, and there is nothing I love more than getting outdoors with my camera, getting to know a place in intimate detail. There’s no better feeling to me than discovering some secret nook of the landscape, waiting for the perfect moment, and capturing a scene of surpassing beauty.

I have worked as a guide throughout the Highlands, and have guided photography and hiking adventures for various adventure travel companies incl Wilderness Scotland and National Geographic.

I hold the Mountain Leader (Summer) qualification as well as a Leave No Trace Trainer’s certificate and Outdoor First Aid certificate.

I like to think of myself as warm and friendly, and a safe pair of hands to help you discover a deeper connection with the wild places.
