The shadows lurk between the stones
Creeping out in the evening and gathering themselves
Growing in the scrapes and slants of the hill
Stretching themselves out, getting ready
Then upward, the shadows take flight
Starling bursting above the trees
Tide rising their way up the hillside
The last beacons fade, all is overcome
The shadows take the sky, and light flees from it
Hurrying off somewhere else, for a while
Leaving us in shadow and the desert sky
Where stars glimmer like raindrops on still water
Earth’s still, Heaven’s alive.
