Children of the Lost Forest

Finding ancient granny pines among the wild places of the western Highlands always gives me a thrill of excitement. The slopes surrounding Loch Maree were once lush with dense pine forests, most of which was felled for iron smelting. But still there are odd survivors, children or grandchildren of that lost forest, and gradually the forest is starting to return.
