Artist’s Statement:

On steep slopes on the foothills of the northern Cairngorms it is still possible to find primeval forest that has never been cut or burned. Even though towns and villages may not lie far away, still it is rare for a human eye to set foot here. The difficulties of reaching this spot are not insignificant. This is the heart of the ancient forest – its final stronghold. There is a deeper, darker and more primal beauty to these woods – a profound sense of ‘otherness.’ I have never felt, in Scotland, so completely surrounded by nature as I did on this day. Deep in the heart of the woods, an unexpected winter storm thrashed the trees with branch breaking winds and thick blizzard snows. I watched, in relative comfort. While I took this shot away with me from there, I am sure I also left something of myself behind.
