    Artist’s Statement:

Tullochgrue is a well known beauty spot overlooking Rothiemurchus and the Cairngorms. The view of the forest from this spot is unparalleled, and it provides a vision of how much of Scotland must have looked when the Caledonian Forest was at its maximum extent. It has long been one of my favourite places to visit with the camera, and over ten years I made hundreds upon hundreds of visits there. Through the years my growing familiarity with the location brought me closer to it, and I learned its many moods. It’s so familiar to me now that I can walk through it in my mind and picture every stone and tree. Sometimes I dream about being there. I’ve photographed it at every time of day in every kind of weather in every season for nearly a decade. I have taken many thousands of photos in this location, and hundreds of this specific view. But of all those hundreds of days I have never seen a more captivating scene than this. This photo is, in essence, the culmination of a decade long relationship with a place.

    • About Me

Hi, I’m David Russell. I am a landscape photographer, writer and natural storyteller living in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland. I am inspired by wild places, especially the ancient Caledonian Forests of Scotland. Besides artistic pursuits I am also a qualified wilderness guide and outdoor instructor in several sports. I have led people on trips throughout Scotland, sharing our beautiful landscapes with people from all walks of life.
