Artist’s Statement:

Loch an Eilean is a popular and well known location in the Cairngorms, and besides the spectacular scenery it is also famous for the ancient ruins of the castle that stand on the island which gives the loch its name (Loch of the Island). This medieval stronghold once belonged to the so-called ‘Wolf of Badenoch’ – Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan (1343 – 1405), hence the name I gave the image. It’s a very popular location that is photographed all the time, but I was eager to try and perfect it. The problem with the usual composition is that there are trees overhanging the shore that often get in the way. So, to get around that, I had to get in the loch. Fortunately, owning several pairs of dry-trousers for kayaking/canoeing meant I had just the right kit, but I still had to stand waist deep in the water, trying my best not to make a ripple and not to drop the camera! I enjoyed a fabulous half hour display of mist and sunlight, before the curtain began to roll back and reveal the mountains. As it did I took this shot, and knew at once that it was a keeper.
